Making realistic wood structures is one of the hardest things when making terrariums. We recommend using a material that is easy to shape and cut to make the structure (PVC pipes, XPS foam) and covering that with something that you can carve into the desired form (expanding foam, insulation foam). The hardest part is the coating, where I recommend using something like drylok for the base, and non toxic acrylic paint for the details. I'd start with a dark layer, and dry brush the details and desired colors in.But that is a really interesting topic, I will try to write a wiki article on that, and will go more in depth into all the techniques!
